But first, you probably want to know the obvious. What is an SEO manager?

I want to first talk a bit about SEO. SEO is all concerned with optimizing your content to help get it ranked on page 1 on Google. This is done by attracting organic traffic to your website. From this definition, we know that producing high-quality content is one of the best ways to drive organic traffic to your website. 

So, what can we expect from an SEO manager?

An SEO manager is there to boost your website’s visibility in all areas. They are the expert in all fields connected with SEO. Here are some of the traits that an SEO manager should be aware of:

  • Knowledge of all SEO tools, including Ahrefs, page optimizer pro, etc
  • Link building research
  • Social Media exposure
  • Keyword analysis
  • Market trends
  • Google analytics

However, the most important area that an SEO manager has control over is the development of the overall SEO strategy. They take into account a lot of factors when it comes to the tailored strategy. They may be hired to work in a company or have already worked in the in-house team from day 1 of development. 

An SEO manager will expect to monitor content daily. This may including finding external places to send links to. An important note to discuss is that the manager can make changes to the content itself. This means that the SEO manager must have experience in writing. 

A good example could be a film producer working with a director. The producer is there to support the creative process and embrace the film’s main selling points.

The SEO manager needs to get behind and understand the brand and its goals as best as possible. For example, one of their roles would be to develop a keyword strategy. They first need to know their target audience and analyze it. 

They will need to know about the following terms: 

  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Technical SEO

As an SEO manager, you need to be aware of targeted traffic. This includes traffic that wants to use the service. 

Another sector that an SEO manager will work on is analysis. This means that an analysis will be done on the content. From this, the manager will know which article is performing well and which ones need further optimization. 

Upon keyword research analysis, the manager will understand more about the user’s search intent. Understanding the user’s search intent is finding knowing the keyword term used and try to identify what exactly the user is searching for. The SEO manager will have to know this when doing keyword research.

The requirements of an SEO manager

The SEO manager needs to have experience in SEO and have a degree in a field related to business and marketing. However, it has been said that you can learn some of the skills from the comfort of your own home. This includes taking an SEO course, but it can take years to perfect it. 

I have mentioned a few areas that an SEO manager needs to know. However, there are quite a few specific tools that an SEO manager needs to have experience in and be able to use in any organization. These tools are:

  • SEMrush
  • Screaming frog
  • Google search console
  • Moz
  • Client relationship management

When a company looks to hire an SEO manager, these are the tools that they expect an SEO manager to use on their website. The last point I mentioned was ‘client relationship mentioned’, this can be seen as a tool or a trait, but an SEO manager will be heavily involved in this area. 

When working on client relationship management, an SEO manager would have worked on the social media and SEO marketing strategy. For both of these strategies, the SEO manager would have worked in teams. This is when maintaining a healthy relationship with the client is important. If you are hired as an SEO manager, the organization that you will be working with is your client, and you have a responsibility to look after the brand when working with it.
